“你从哪里来？你要到哪里去？”
沉默……
这不光小王子，这是我们每个人都面对的一个终极哲学问题。
그가 어디서 왔는지 알기까지는 오랜 시간이 걸렸어요. 어린 왕자는 내게 이것저것 물어보면도 내 질문에는 귀를 기울이지 않았어요. 어쩌다 그가 한두 마디씩 툭툭 내뱉는 말을 통해서 나는 그에 대해 점차 알게 되었어요.
그가 처음 내 비행기를 보았을 때, 이렇게 물었어요. "이 물건은 뭐예요?"
“이건 물건이 아니란다. 날이다니는 거야. 비행기지, 내 비행기.”
나는 내가 날아다닌다는 걸 그에게 자랑스럽게 말해주었어요. 그러자 그는 큰소리로 외쳤어요.
"뭐라고요! 그럼, 아저씨도 하늘에서 떨어진 건가요?”
“그래.”
내가 겸손하게 대답했어요.
“아! 참 이상한 일이네!”
어린 왕자는 너무나도 예쁘게 웃음을 터뜨렸어요. 그 웃음은 나룰 몹시 화나게 했어요. 나는 불행을 심각한 것으로 생각해주길 바랐거든요.
그가 덧불여 말했어요.
“아저씨도 하늘에서 왔군요! 그럼 아저씨는 어느 별에서 왔는데요?”
순간 나는 수수께끼 같은 그의 존재에 대해 한 줄기 희미한 빛이 비치는 알게 되었어요. 그래서 갑자기 이렇게 물어보았어요.
“너 다른 별에서 왔단말이니?”
그러나 그는 내 말에 아무런 대꾸도 하지 않았어요. 내 비행기를 바라보면 그저 조용히 고개를 끄덕이는 것이었어요.
“그렇겠구나. 저것으론 아주 먼데서는 올 수는 없었겠다.”
그는 오랫동안 생각에 잠겨 있었어요. 이윽고 그는 호주머니에서 그림을 꺼내 들면서 보물을 들여다보는 데 빠져드는 것 이었어요.
다른 별들에 관해 알둣 말듯 한 이이기에 난 얼머나 궁금했는지 몰라요. 그래서 나는 좀더 알아보려고 애를 썼어요.
“꼬마 산사야, 넌 어디서 온 거디? 네가 사는 곳이 어디니? 그 양을 어디로 데려가려고 하는 거니?”
“물론이지. 그리고 너만 좋다면 낮에 양을 매어둘 수 있는 끈도 줄게. 말뚝도 주고.”
그 제안은 어린 왕자의 마음에 충격을 준 것 같았어요.
“묶어둔다고요? 참 이상한 생각이군요”
“그렇지만 양을 묶어두지 않으면 아무 데나 돌아다니다가 길을 잃을 텐데……”
내 친구는 다시 한 번 웃음을 터뜨렸어요.
“대체 양이 어디로 간다는건가요?”
“어디든지. 앞으로 곧장”
그러자 어린 왕자는 진지한 표정으로 말하는 것이었어요.
“상관없어요. 내가 사는 곳은 아주 좁은 곳이니까요.”
그러고는 우수 어린 듯한 목소리로 더붙였어요.
“앞으로 가봐야 그렇게 멀리 갈 수도 없고요.”

It took me a long time to learn where he came from. The little prince, who asked me so many questions, never seemed to hear the ones I asked him. It was from words dropped by chance that, little by little, everything was revealed to me.
The first time he saw my airplane, for instance (I shall not draw my airplane; that would be much too complicated for me), he asked me:
"What is that object?"
"That is not an object. It flies. It is an airplane. It is my airplane."
And I was proud to have him learn that I could fly.
He cried out, then:
"What! You dropped down from the sky?"
"Yes," I answered, modestly.
"Oh! That is funny!"
And the little prince broke into a lovely peal of laughter, which irritated me very much. I like my misfortunes to be taken seriously.
Then he added:
"So you, too, come from the sky! Which is your planet?"
At that moment I caught a gleam of light in the impenetrable mystery of his presence; and I demanded, abruptly:
"Do you come from another planet?"
But he did not reply. He tossed his head gently, without taking his eyes from my plane:
"It is true that on that you can&`&t have come from very far away…"
And he sank into a reverie, which lasted a long time. Then, taking my sheep out of his pocket, he buried himself in the contemplation of his treasure.
You can imagine how my curiosity was aroused by this half-confidence about the "other planets." I made a great effort, therefore, to find out more on this subject.
"My little man, where do you come from? What is this &`&where I live,&`& of which you speak? Where do you want to take your sheep?"
After a reflective silence he answered:
"The thing that is so good about the box you have given me is that at night he can use it as his house."
"That is so. And if you are good I will give you a string, too, so that you can tie him during the day, and a post to tie him to."
But the little prince seemed shocked by this offer:
"Tie him! What a queer idea!"
"But if you don&`&t tie him," I said, "he will wander off somewhere, and get lost."
My friend broke into another peal of laughter:
"But where do you think he would go?"
"Anywhere. Straight ahead of him."
Then the little prince said, earnestly:
"That doesn&`&t matter. Where I live, everything is so small!"
And, with perhaps a hint of sadness, he added:
"Straight ahead of him, nobody can go very far…"
