The Boy Scouts of America 美国男童子军 was founded in Washington, D.C., on February 8, 1910. It was started by William Boyce who got the idea from the British Boy Scout Association organized in England by Sir Robert Baden-Powell. There are about 3 million members in the Boy Scouts' traditional programs. Boys aged 7-10 are Cub Scouts. They are separated 分开,划分 by grade into packs 队. First graders are Tiger Cubs, second graders are Wolf Cubs, third graders are Bear Cubs, and fourth graders are Webelos. Boys aged 11-17 are Boy Scouts. Boys in this group participate 参加 in outdoor activities to develop character 品质,性格 and citizenship. Boys aged 14-40 can also participate in a program called Venturing. They learn leadership 领导能力 through high-adventure activities. Scouts meet regularly in small neighborhood groups. Cubs are supervised by Cubmasters. Boy Scouts and Venturers are led by Scoutmasters. Scouts acquire merit badges 荣誉奖章 by accomplishing 完成,实现 special tasks. When a Scout earns a certain number of badges he is honored with a rank title. The highest rank that can be achieved is Eagle Scout. National jamborees 少年团体大会 are held every four years. Scouts from all over the United States get together for a big celebration.
